There She Is! Aztech Mountain's First Women's Collection

The Aspen- and New York-based luxe sportswear brand Aztech Mountain debuts its first collection for women.

Aztech Mountain imagined strong, spirited women when designing its first-ever women’s collection.

The team at Aztech Mountain often combs the archives of the Aspen Historical Society for images of authentic skiwear from the 1940s through the ’90s—looking at everything from race suits to ski sweaters to vintage puffers, all to inspire and inform a new interpretation of skiwear. The performance sportswear company founded by part-time Aspenites Heifara Rutgers and David Roth, and co-owned by Bode Miller, has some exciting news: This season it launches its first collection for women.

The inspiration image? This one here of ski racer Kiki Cutter ripping a turn down Aspen Mountain at a 1986 charity event. Cutter was the first racer—man or woman—to win a World Cup title (in 1968), and she held the record for the most cups won by an American for two decades.

The first women’s collection includes two ski and two lifestyle jackets, ski pants and technical midlayers, all made with “a real lavishness for quality of detail and materials,” says head of design Casey Cadwallader (who is also the creative director of fashion house Thierry Mugler).

The Cutter photo was screen printed into the lining of the collection’s Nuke Suit ($1,650), embedding a piece of the Aspen spirit inside the waterproof, down-filled parka. When asked about this image and who the Aztech woman is, co-founder Rutgers describes her as “a fantastic skier who looks phenomenal and is having a great time.” Sounds like many Aspen amazons we know—past and present.
