Whether a longtime local or a recent transplant, here's how to live like an Aspenite.
As we continue to brave the COVID-19 pandemic and the short-term as well as the long-term changes it has brought, it’s vital that we recognize and appreciate the sense of community and connection we feel here in Aspen. We live here because we choose to. And whether we’re drawn to Aspen for nature, community, art or adventure, we are consciously choosing the Aspen lifestyle. As we progress through the winter season, remember to take a step back, reflect and remember what first inspired you and why you still choose to make Aspen your home or your home away from home.
Life can be busy and challenging, but keep these tips in the back of your mind as best practices for any local, or those who want to live the local Aspen lifestyle.
Life in big cities moves fast and there’s never enough time in the day. But life moves a little slower here in Aspen—something we locals enjoy and which guests are seeking out when they visit our town. There is a slow speed limit and an abundance of stop signs. And also due to the heavy pedestrian traffic around town—they have the right of way. Also, honking is never the answer. Not only is honking disruptive, but it’s a sure sign of a visitor. Have patience with drivers—they are probably just trying to figure out where they are going or staying safe on slick roads.
Living in the present can be a challenge for most people. However, in Aspen that’s what most locals and guests are constantly striving to achieve. Appreciating the nature that surrounds Aspen is of utmost importance; however, there are several other ways to help keep each of us in tune with the Aspen lifestyle.
Think about where you are walking. Streets are made for cars, while sidewalks are there for the pedestrians. Try not to clog up the sidewalks by walking multiple people across. Self-awareness also applies to the ski mountain. It’s important to pay attention to your surroundings and stay cognizant of those around you whether you are just now learning to ski or are sending it. Skiing and boarding can be dangerous when one is not on their toes. Stay present in the lift lines and be sure to alternate with skiers in other lines, and stay alert on the slopes.
Be kind and stay generous. We are a community that cares about one another and truly wants everyone to have a good time in Aspen.
This winter, specifically, please remember to keep at least 6 feet of space between you and others, whether it’s in a lift line, waiting for hot cocoa or wandering about in town. We want to have a full and healthy winter season.
And finally, tip your servers well. It gets busy around Aspen in peak season, and all those who are making the town and mountain run are working hard to make our as well as our visitors’ Aspen experience as memorable as possible.
Most importantly, breathe the fresh mountain air, take in the Aspen spirit, and celebrate life as the Aspen locals do. Because relax, it’s Aspen!
