IN A TOWN WITH ICONIC PROPERTIES like The Little Nell and the Hotel Jerome, a newcomer to the Aspen lodging scene needs to offer something unique and completely fresh. And Aspen Street Lodge (aspenstreetlodge.com), which opened in downtown Aspen in 2021 on quiet Francis Whitaker Park, is just that.

Designed by Forum Phi and built by Chris Madigan of Madigan + Co, Aspen Street Lodge bridges the commercial core of Aspen and its westside residential neighborhoods with an exterior that mimics the bark of an aspen tree. Charred black shou sugi ban wood, supplied by Delta Millwork, blends with lighter stone work, welcoming guests and visitors into what feels one part modern ski chalet and one part contemporary mountain hotel.

Aspen Street Lodge comprises nine lodge rooms and a stunning two-bedroom penthouse suite that’s sure to become Aspen’s most coveted room key. With Hakwood wood floors throughout, custom French oak and steel staircases, restoration millwork by Delta Millwork and custom bunks and cabinetry by Watson Mills & Design, Aspen Street Lodge is a feast for the eyes. Guests will appreciate features like rooms appointed with Italian Poliform furniture, wallpaper handpainted by local artist Kelly Porter of Porter Teleo and bathrooms showcasing floor-to-ceiling marble. You’ll also love touch-screen Neeo remotes that control everything from the temperature to the shades. Even transition areas beckon with beautiful touches—hallways feature rotating pieces by Kelly Peters, a local contemporary abstract artist.
Aspen Street Lodge’s crown jewel might be its expansive rooftop terrace—with breathtaking views stretching from Shadow Mountain across Aspen Mountain all the way to Independence Pass—complete with a pool, hot tub and a Kalamazoo custom outdoor kitchen, including a wood-fired pizza oven. Aspen Street Lodge offsets its entire carbon footprint by way of a 20-kilowatt photovoltaic system and a ground-source heat pump that generates 360,000 BTUs per hour. Other thoughtful guest-focused details include an experiential movie room, fully equipped game room (think bubble hockey, shuffleboard and a retro polycade), full bar for on-site après and electric cruiser and mountain bikes for guests to use around town. Skiers and snowboarders will appreciate the heated boot room, oversize gear lockers on the ground floor and the chance to book lessons or adventures with the lodge’s in-house pro: world champion skier Chris Davenport. This is one genius lodging and a welcome arrival to Aspen.
