DESIGNED TO BE THE ANTITHESIS OF THE CONCRETE JUNGLE, a new 16-story high-rise in Denver’s River North neighborhood features a dramatic landscaped canyon stretching across the building’s mostly glass facade. The building appears to crack open to reveal a living walkway of trees and plants. Residents can skip the elevator and hike home each day.

Designed by Beijing-based MAD Architects (i-mad.com) and Denver’s Davis Partnership (davispartnership.com), One River North is an innovative architectural example of biophilia, the idea that humans are happier and healthier when connected to nature. The walkway ascends through a series of distinct landscape zones, from native greenery to an alpine plateau. MAD designed the shape of the faux mountain trail to mimic the organic process of erosion. Naturally, the trail culminates in a landscaped rooftop with a pool area and views of RiNo’s art district below.

The building, from developer The Max Collaborative, has 187 luxury apartments available for rent. The first tenants moved in this spring.
