The Macallan Fine & Rare Collection just got even more special.
Debuted Sept. 1, The Macallan Fine & Rare 1989 was filled on Dec. 12 1989 and bottled in January 2022. The 750 mL decanter retails for $18,500, while the 700 mL option goes for $17,300.
The new bottle expands The Macallan Fine & Rare Collection, which first launched in 2002. Made up of 59 individual releases that span eight decades, the collection features the earliest expression distilled in 1926 and a 1993 varietal.
“The Macallan Fine & Rare Collection is inspired by our whisky-making legacy,” said Kirsteen Campbell, master whiskey maker at The Macallan. “It is the finest and rarest range of single malt whiskies in the world and reveals the mastery of wood and spirit, for which The Macallan has been renowned since 1824. These 59 unique vintages are products of nature’s gentle process, undisturbed for decades in sherry seasoned oak casks.”
The newest 1989 edition to the Fine & Rare Collection has an aroma of dark cherries, sweet treacle toffee, cocoa powder and gingerbread. On the palate are notes of Amaretti biscuits, caramelized pineapple, demerara sugar, rich treacle tart, candied fruits, plum jam and a hint of dark chocolate. It makes for a multi-layered, long and complex finish.
“Fine & Rare 1989 will join its distinguished predecessors and it is a privilege to play a part in crafting this incomparable collection,” Campbell added.
What’s more, the new release was carefully crafted to reach a rich mahogany color, done so by the selected sherry seasoned European oak casks.
The 1989 Macallan whiskey will only be available at select bars, restaurants and premium retailers in the United States starting this month.
